The Nigerian social media space woke up last week to the news of a lady who, in a video, claimed she had intercourse with a dog for N1.7 million.

The lady, who simply identified herself as Veegodess, posted a video on TikTok on April 29, saying ‘there was no big deal in wanting to be with an animal’.

The TikTok user would recant her statements a day later, saying she was only joking.

“For clarification purpose, I did not do anything with any dog. The video I made was just for [sic] joke. I didn’t mean it and I’ve deleted the video since. Please, accept my apology. I’m sorry for making that video,” Veegodess said.

While tendering an apology to the public for her ‘prank video’, the Nigeria Police Force announced it was on a manhunt for the lady for bestiality.

As soon as news got out that the police were searching for the TikTok user, some Nigerians faulted the move.

“Why are they looking for her? In what Nigerian law would they want to prosecute her? I’m very much against what she did, but there is no law as to that effect. That’s purely issue of morals,” Luka Egga, a Twitter user said.

Another Twitter user known as Olise Emmanuel also said the following:

“At this point she’s morally wrong. When did Nigerian police start going for people with wrong morals? There’s no criminal offence here.”

The Criminal Code Act of 1990, Section 214, actually highlights bestiality as a felony. It also lists the sexual act as an ‘unnatural offence’ punishable by Nigerian law.

“Any one who has carnal knowledge of a person against the order of nature; or has carnal knowledge of an animal; or permits a male person have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature; is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years,” the Criminal Code states.
