Residents of Oshodi in Lagos Island, Lagos, have accused police officers at the Adeniji Central Police Station in Okepopo of shooting Wale Ayedun, also a resident, during a chase.

According to eyewitnesses, the police shot at Ayedun while defecating in the early hours of Monday.

One of Ayedun’s friends, who preferred anonymity, told FIJ that he had come out from a tenement building, where he lived, to defecate outside when the incident happened.

“As he was defecating in the open, he saw people running. The police officers were chasing them. Without knowing what was going on, he started running too,” his friend said.

“When the police saw that he was also running, they left the people they were originally chasing and pursued him like they were intent on killing him. They shot at him many times from afar, but missed. The police officers then chased him to Isale Oshodi, where they eventually shot him.”

The source said while Ayedun was fighting for his life after falling to their bullet, one of officers told him to ‘stand up’.

“The police officer told him to ‘stand up now’ and then left him there. Immediately, we took Wale to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where we spent N75,000,” he said.

“As I speak to you now, two of our guys are receiving treatments at the hospital from the injuries they suffered from gunshots.

“Ayedun was innocent and everyone can testify that he was. While he was in the hospital, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) gave us N20,000 to treat him. He was sick when he heard about the incident.

Another source, who also asked not to be named, told FIJ that Ayedun died at the general hospital from gunshot wound. He also stated that Ayedun’s parents has requested that his friends bring his body to his hometown in Abeokuta, Ogun State, so he could be buried according to Islamic rites.

“Ayedun was still trying to drag his trousers up when the police saw him. His excreta was still on his body when we found him,” the source said.

When FIJ called Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Spokesperson, to confirm the incident, he said the police did not shoot at anyone during the incident.

“People were fighting and they shot themselves. The police did not shoot him. The DPO gave his friends N20,000 to treat him,” he stated.
