Edeh Odah, a Lagos-based trader, has narrated how policemen in the Abattoir area of Agege, Lagos, extorted N26,000 from him on April 30.

In a series of tweets, Odah said he was on a motorcycle when he was stopped by some officers in the area.

“On getting to Abattoir, a group of policemen stopped me from the bike and I alighted. After I had told them my name, they asked If I was a cultist. I told them that I was not. I further explained that I was going home because I was tired,” Odah wrote.

“A few minutes later, two other police women joined them and one of them dipped her hands into my pocket. She forcefully took my phone and said I should follow them to their office if I still needed the phone.”

Odah explained that the police officers would then tell him to unlock his phone. When he did, they searched through it but could not find anything incriminating.

“After a while, the officers asked me to open my bank application. While I was still adamant to do so, one of the female officers called me a Yahoo Boy. She slapped me and threatened to call the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if I failed to cooperate with them,” Odah wrote.

“After so many pressure, I opened the app and they discovered that I had N31,000 in it. Then, they told me to write a statement, claiming I was a Yahoo Boy and a cultist. They told me to withdraw the N31,000 from my account but I withdrew only N30,000.

“I had to plead with them that I have no transport fare to go back home before they could give me N4000 back and they took N26,000.”

Odah said the officers eventually returned his phone to him after extorting the money from him.

When FIJ contacted Olatunji Oladimeji, Abattoir Divisional Police Officer (DPO) via a phone call, he said he was unaware of the incident but “the victim should visit the same police station again to lay a complaint”.
