A man whose friend was on the verge of being extorted by officers of the Nigeria Police in Ekiti State on Sunday afternoon dug himself out by inserting wrong personal identification number.

According to the man, the money was intended for the purchase of a laptop for a project in school.

“Men of the Nigeria police Force tried to extort 90K out of the Laptop money that my friend has been saving to use for his project in school,” @TobiDaGreatest narrated.

“He was taken to the ATM, Thank God for the security men of the bank that signalled to him to press wrong pins so ATM can swallow his Card.

“…I called him to ask what was causing the delays and with the way he was reluctant in the conversation, immediately sensed that police were with him so I didn’t bother to call him again. He called later after they had let him go.”

Carrying out arbitrary arrests of people and forcing them to ATMs to clear their bank accounts is a regular practice by some corrupt officers of the Nigeria Police.

Last year, there were protests in many parts of the country calling for the disbandment of the notoriously corrupt unit of the police, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), and a reform of the police. The unit was later replaced with the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT). But there have been reports that the SARS officers are still operating in some locations in the country.
