The Palestinian American was covering a military raid in Jenin, a northern town and historical flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, when she was hit in the head by a bullet during a gun battle between Israeli and Palestinian forces on Wednesday.

While absolving itself of any wrongdoing, Israel claimed there was a possibility that Abu Akleh was hit by armed Palestinians who fired widely during the crossfire.

The Palestinian government is, however, claiming that the reporter was killed by Israeli forces.
