Samuel Ajayi, an Ibadan-based teacher, has detailed how Michael Adeyefa, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Lagos, defrauded him and a friend, also a teacher, of N56,000 each, under the guise of helping them secure a job.

Ajayi told FIJ that Adeyefa told him and his friend in November 2021 that some job slots were available at the medical centre, and he was willing to sell each for N120,000.

“Adeyefa told me that my friend and I would pay N15,000 each as application fee. He also told me that we would discuss how to pay the rest when we started work,” Ajayi said.

“When we sent the application fees to him, we got a message that we had applied for the job at the FMC, Lagos. Three days later, we got another message that they had shortlisted us for an interview and that we should prepare for the interview.

“Adeyefa told us not to bother about the interview because he could bribe his way through. He asked me to pay N5,000 so he could bribe those in charge of the screening.”

Ajayi also claimed that Adeyefa said he and his friend had to pay N10,000 each for tax numbers before they could get the job.

“He texted us in December and asked us to provide our tax identification numbers. We had none at the time, but he said his boss was on her way to Abuja to confirm our job applications. He said if we failed to provide it, we would lose the job opportunity,” Ajayi said.

“After we paid him N10,000 for the tax numbers, he told us that the FG posted us to two FMCs that were located outside Lagos. He said we would have to pay N20,000 each for him to help us with reposting. Because we wanted to work in Lagos so badly, we paid him.”

Ajayi said he and his friend later became suspicious that Adeyefa was fraudulent with his incessant demand for money, but chose to remain silent because they were unsure.

“Two weeks after we paid him for reposting, he called to notify us that our job applications were successful,” the teacher said.

“Adeyefa said the federal government had selected us after his boss took our credentials to Abuja. He said we had to come to Lagos to get our appointment letters.

“Later, he called back to say that his boss was withholding our appointment letters until we paid 80 percent of the N120,000. We were shocked because it was not our initial agreement. After all, he asked for money at every stage of the job application.”

Ajayi said he told Adeyefa that they could not afford it because they had not started working.

“When we told him we could not afford the N120,000 because we had not started working, he blocked us on all platforms,” Ajayi said.

“Three weeks ago, he reached out to us and asked us to still pay. He said there were some slots for us, but we ignored him because he is a fraudster.”

When FIJ called Adeyefa via the phone number provided by his victims, a voice claimed our reporter dialed the wrong number.
