Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has condemned the attack on worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.

Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-General’s spokesman, made this known in a statement on Monday.

“The Secretary-General condemns in strongest terms the heinous attacks on the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, on June 5 that resulted in the death and injuries to scores of civilians as people gathered for the Pentecost service,” the statement reads.

“The Secretary-General emphasises that attacks on places of worship are abhorrent. He urges the Nigerian authorities to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. He also expresses his sympathies to, and solidarity with, the Government and people of Nigeria.”

A viral video online showed that worshippers were killed and left to drown in their own blood on the church premises.

FIJ had earlier reported that the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, was predominantly a gun raid rather than a bomb blast as reported by a number of platforms.
