The court hearing of Don-Chima George and Rasaq Oluwasegun, which was to take place on Tuesday, was adjourned due to the ongoing industrial action by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The two men had gang-raped a 23-year-old lady in 2019 at the De Lankaster Hotel, Lekki.

The hashtag #JusticeForRapeInNigeria had been used to call for justice across social media. However, many on social media were recently surprised to find that the case was still in the court.

FIJ had earlier reported how the Directorate for Public Prosecution (DPP) had bungled up the case by failing to call in key witnesses who could have helped in getting a conviction. The case (Suit Number ID/8813C/2019) was brought to the Sexual Offences Court, Lagos High Court, Ikeja headed by Hon. Justice Abiola Soladoye.

The last hearing for the two men was held on March 23, and lasted barely 10 minutes before the case of the prosecution was closed. A lawyer who had spoken with FIJ had explained that the defence would be called to open its case and present its own evidence.

The case of Don-Chima and Rasaq came back into public light when the alleged sexual assault case of Yoruba actor, Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, went viral on social media.

According to a report by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, there are as low as 65 rape convictions between 1973 and 2019. The Lagos State justice system seems bent on keeping that number low, having failed to adequately and diligently prosecute the case against Don-Chima and Rasaq Segun.
