Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has resigned his position.

On Thursday afternoon, he conceded to a rebellion by his cabinet, a wave of resignations among cabinet members, loss of the Conservative Party’s support and backlash for his handling of the party’s sex-and-bullying scandal.

Johnson announced his plans to stay on as prime minister until his party selects a new leader, The New York Times reported. While he’s likely to continue as UK Prime Minister until the autumn, he seizes to be the leader of the country’s Conservative Party.

Announcing his decision outside Downing Street, Johnson said, “It is clearly now the will of the preliminary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader. The process of choosing that new leader should begin now.

“I want to tell you how sorry I am to be giving up the best job in the world.”

Johnson had been in office since 2019, and led the UK to a famed exit from the European Union via what was popularised as Brexit.
