Nasir el-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, has called for the immediate dismissal of all nurses below grade level 14 for embarking on unlawful strike. He directed the Ministry of Health to advertise vacancies for the immediate recruitment of new nurses to replace those sacked.

The directive came in a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye.

El-Rufai further ordered that any academic staff of Kaduna State University who failed to report to work would be sacked. He instructed that the authorities of the university submit a daily copy of attendance register for all categories of staff to the State Government and the Commissioner of Education.

The recent developments come as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) embarked on a five-day warning strike in Kaduna State. Earlier in the afternoon, there were reports of protesters being attacked by hoodlums, a similar modus operandi used during the EndSARS protests in October 2020 across the country. El-Rufai had also declared the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba a wanted person.

Ministries, departments and agencies were equally ordered to submit daily copies of attendance register to the Head of Service,  Bariatu Y. Mohammed.

“We will reform and rightsize our public service to meet the needs and resources of the Kaduna State even if the NLC strikes ad infinitum. The government remains committed to using all the resources it can generate to serve the interests of the majority of its citizens, providing social services beyond paying salaries, always putting the interests of the many ahead of the few.”
