Olalekan Aresokan, a stab concrete designer resident in Abeokuta, has recounted how D Loan, a quick loan app, defamed and cost him a N3 million contract.

Aresokan told FIJ that he had not defaulted on the loan he got from the company when they sent out a defamatory message to all his phone contacts.

He said he received a call from an agent of the loan company on July 13, the day the loan was due, reminding him to pay, and he promised he would.

“I explained to the call representative that I could have paid earlier, but the Monday and Tuesday holidays stopped me from working. But I assured him that I would pay before 5 pm,” Aresokan told FIJ.

“But by 2 pm, I started receiving a deluge of texts and a barrage of calls from people because D Loan had declared me wanted.”

Aresokan stated that he called the call representative immediately to know why they sent a defamatory message to all his contacts but the representative told him they would send an apology message after he repaid the loan.

“The representative said that he did not authorise the defamatory messages which D Loan sent to my contacts. But immediately after I repaid the loan, I waited for them to send an apology message, but they never did,” he said.

Aresokan said that he could not bear the loss of the defamatory message because it cost him a N3 million job.

“He sent the message to a prospective client, and the job was about N3 million. When I got to the site, they asked me not to bother,” he said.

“Later in the day, I called someone on the site to find out why there was a sudden change. He said the boss showed them a WhatsApp message from D Loan, stating that I was wanted for defrauding them.”

He stated that the messages had damaged his reputation as people kept calling him because of the threatening messages D Loan sent to them.

“I borrowed N9,000 to repay N14,000 in seven days. I did not default on paying them, but they ruined me,” he said.

FIJ placed several calls to the D Loan call representative who reached out to Aresokan, but his lines did not connect. He had also not replied to a text sent to him at press time.
