Twitter critic and a former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, has criticised Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for not intervening in the ‘anti-Nigerian’ activities of Twitter given her position as a board member.

Garba, who had previously sued Twitter in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest of 2020, said on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Friday evening that he was happy that the Nigerian Government indefinitely suspended the social media platform.

“We have Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the current director of the WTO on the board of Twitter. Is she part of the instigators of Twitter? Why won’t she call them to order when they are talking against Nigeria? Why is it that we have never had a single tweet or any comment from Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala about the activities of Twitter? Is she supporting IPOB?” Adamu asked.

Meanwhile, Gbenga Sesan, the Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative, who was also on the programme, agreed that Twitter was right to have deleted the tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari, which threatened harm to a section of the country but maintained that the Nigerian Government’s suspension of Twitter had no impact on Nigerians accessing the platform to express their opinions.

“People can have access if we block Twitter in Nigeria, that’s what circumvention is about. Basically, all you need is to download a VPN…So in a way, it is a waste of time and resources for government to think it can block people from using Twitter in Nigeria,” Sesan said.

“It is like a cow chasing its own tail. It’s not possible because circumvention is definitely going to be an option for people that want to use Twitter.”
