Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is expected in Lagos on Thursday to launch the Deep Blue Project of the  Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Muyiwa Adejobi, Lagos State Police spokesperson, had earlier confirmed the visit to FIJ in an SMS on Wednesday, but he did not state the reason.

The Deep Blue Project initiated by the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Federal Ministry of Defence is meant to strengthen national security on land, sea and air.

Buhari’s anticipated visit is, however, only two days short of a mega protest scheduled to take place at Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos, on June 12, raising the possibility of a cold welcome, the kind that Usman ALkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police, was treated to on his arrival in Lagos Wednesday morning.

Dozens of residents booed and called the IGP names as his heavily guarded convoy passed through the Oshodi-Anthony road.  

With the recent ban on Twitter, a frontline social media platform through which Nigerians communicate their grievances and criticize government policies, the President’s popularity among young Nigerians seems to have reduced significantly, raising the possibility of unrest anytime he or a key government player is seen in public.
