Idris Salako, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, has resigned from his position.

The Lagos State Government made this known on Monday in a tweet appearing on its official Twitter page.

Gbenga Omotoso, the state’s commissioner for information and strategy, signed the statement.

“The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has accepted the resignation of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako. This is a prelude to the restructuring of the ministry and its agencies,” the statement reads.

“The Governor warns all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion, no matter who the perpetrators are.”

Salako’s resignation is coming after the collapse of a seven-storey building in Victoria Island during the weekend.

Lagos has counted over a dozen building collapse incidents under the Sanwo-Olu-led government, and reports have fingered the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) as corrupt and negligent.

Earlier, FIJ reported how LASBCA carried out selective demolition of 63 buildings around Ogombo, Ajah, in October 2021. LASBCA had spared the buildings belonging to influential people in the community for no clear reason.

A building belonging to Bose Akinyemi, a chief superintendent of police in Lagos, was marked but spared, while the houses on both sides of the police chief’s apartment were taken down.

LASBCA has watched landlords get away with constructing buildings with substandard materials and at great risk.
