Voices of people crying for rescue under the rubble were heard as officials were set to demolish the unaffected part of the collapsed building in the Mushin area of Lagos.

Following a visit to the scene, FIJ had reported the rescue of three persons, including a 10-month-old baby, from the three-storey building’s rubble.

FIJ gathered that the building comprised a night club, residential apartments, stores and an underground space.

The crying voices were said to be coming from the night club and the underground section.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management, said a search and rescue operation was ongoing to find two females who had been reported missing.

“Two females are reported missing. We have been calling their phone numbers since the development happened. One is ringing, while the other is switched off,” he said.

“We have to bring down the remaining building because it is in distress and can cause more damage.”

An occupant of the building said that one of the missing ladies, identified as Joy, was trapped under the building.

There are speculations from some of the residents that a soakaway behind the building had weakened its foundation.

Earlier, the Lagos State authorities gave occupants of the unaffected part of the building an hour to take their belongings out ahead of a demolition.
