The Kenyan Government has denied any involvement in the arrest and extradition of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to Nigeria.

In reaction to the announcement of the re-arraignment of the IPOB leader before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, Kingsley Kanu had said on Wednesday that his brother was arrested in Kenya.

According to TheCable, Wilfred Machage, Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, however, described the allegation as a deliberate effort to “fuel antagonistic feeling amongst the southern section of the Nigerian people against the Kenya people”.

He further challenged anyone with information revealing the role of the Kenyan government in the arrest whatsoever should present such facts.

“I want to address the allegation by denying that Kenya was involved in the alleged arrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria of Mr Kanu,” Machage said. 

“The allegation is fictional, imaginary and deliberately concocted to fuel antagonistic feeling amongst the southern section of the Nigerian people against the Kenya people.

“Indeed many countries have been accused — Rwanda, Czech Republic, Britain, Ethiopia — and God knows which other countries. I want to challenge anyone with facts relating to this alleged arrest in Kenya to present this fact. This will include how and who was particularly involved in the alleged arrest.

On two different occasions that both Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), and Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, spoke about the rearrest of Kanu, they both avoided giving details on the location of the arrest.

Machage maintained that only the Nigerian government could give answers, being a sovereign country.

“Nigeria is a sovereign country. It’s your country. Instead of facing the Kenyan High Commission in Nigeria to ask some of these questions, you should face your government,” he said. 

“The government of Nigeria knows how they arrested him. They have the answers, not me.”
