The rape case of Don-Chima George and Rasaq Oluwasegun Oke scheduled for Thursday was adjourned to July 14. The case has been in court for three years.

The case falls under the Sexual Offences Court, Lagos High Court, Ikeja where Justice Abiola Soladoye will listen to the no case submission by the defence and deliver a ruling.

The 64 days industrial strike embarked on by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) affected the hearing of the case. The defence, led by Tunji Ayanlaja (SAN), has moved for a motion of no-case submission which will be heard on July 14.

A no-case submission in court means that the defence is telling the court that the prosecutor has not proven anything. In this case, the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) has been unable to prove that Don-Chima and Rasaq gang raped a 23-year-old lady despite the availability of key witnesses to the case. The DPP has failed to call in the police who handled the investigations and the doctor who examined the raped lady.

FIJ learnt that after the publication of its reports, some of the lawyers at the DPP’s office interpreted the report as a political witchhunt and not a call for justice. The DPP’s office, which FIJ learnt is under immense pressure to jeopardize the case, became more consoling to Don-Chima and Rasaq.

In 2019, when the case was under public scrutiny, the hashtag #JusticeForRapeInNigeria was used on social media as a cry for justice.
