Less than a month after FIJ’s July 27 report, Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) recalled a N151,845 cumulative energy bill that was erroneously imposed on Sade Atinuke*, one of its customers.
Atinuke, a Lagos-based lawyer, acquired a new property in Odogbolu, Ketu, Lagos State, and applied to IKEDC for the creation of a new energy account for the property.
Instead of granting her request, IKEDC forced a N151,845 electricity bill from two questionable energy accounts claiming it was for the property and its boys’ quarters and owed by the former occupants of the property.

Meanwhile, records indicated that the property was not in use at the time the bills were said to have accumulated as it had been demolished and uninhabited since 2021.
On August 10, IKEDC wrote to Atinuke in an email that her energy accounts had been adjusted to reflect the removal of the N151,845 debt.
Atinuke confirmed to FIJ in an appreciation email on Monday that the DisCo had indeed withdrawn the imposed bill.
“You would recall that I contacted FIJ on Ikeja Electric’s decision to levy an unutilized electricity bill on me as a new subscriber. An adjustment of N157,845.46 each was granted on the two accounts, thereby bringing the standing balance to zero naira on the two accounts,” her email read in part.
