Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is set to probe and sanction Akindele Omotosho, a lecturer accused of sexually harassing present and former students of the institution.

A source in the School of Liberal Studies, where Omotosho teaches in the Mass Communication department, told FIJ that the department was set to strip him of his roles as course adviser and timetable officer, and move him out of an office he uses alone.

The sanctions, according to the source, were interim measures taken pending the outcome of a probe initiated by the institution’s Sexual Harassment Committee.

“The matter has been submitted to the Sexual Harassment Committee already; they are looking into it,” the source told FIJ.

FIJ also learnt that some of the victims had written petitions to YABATECH’s Internal Quality Assurane (IQA).

When FIJ contacted Joe Ejiofor, the institution’s spokesman, he confirmed knowledge of the allegations but remained mum on the probe by the Sexual Harassment Committee.

“The college has zero tolerance for sexual harassment towards student and staff, because it is a two-way thing,” he told FIJ. “We do not tolerate it here. If there are petitions, the committee will look into it.”

Meanwhile, some other lecturers accused of sexual harassment have contacted their accusers and tendered apologies for their actions.

FIJ contacted multiple accused lecturers for comments on allegations made against them, and moments after, some of the accusers reached out to FIJ to confirm the lecturers had apologized.
