Femi John, a Rivers State resident and consultant, has accused CHIP Training and Consulting (CTC), a Pakistani consultancy firm, of failing to pay his $4,600 renumeration for work done between May and August 2022.

John told FIJ that his contract with the company, which has offices in Pakistan, Nigeria and the UK, was terminated on August 27 after he was accused of under-performing and generating poor key informant interviews (KII) while doing some field work for the company.

He told FIJ that prior to his termination, he was commended for good performance, and his KII was deemed good enough, only for him to receive a termination notice a short while after.

He said he was contacted by Tanveer Amjad, CTC Business Development Coordinator, on February 10, 2022, and offered a consultancy role to help with a programme management training in Nigeria. The programme was to be funded by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

Amjad then sent an official mail to John, which read:

Hello Osuntokun, Femi John, I hope you are well. CHIP Training and Consulting (CTC) is an international management consultancy firm with offices in UK, Nigeria and Pakistan. We intend to apply for assignment in Nigeria, and reached your CV through Dev Aid. I want to check if you are available for the assignment on Programme Management Training (UNICEF), and what is your day rate in USD? Looking forward to hear from you soon. Regards, Tanveer Amjad, Business Development Coordinator, CTC.

Speaking with FIJ, John said, “I was contacted via a phone call by Tanveer, a staffer of CTC Pakistan, on the 10th of February 2022. He informed me of a bid for a consultancy, saying he found my details on a consultancy or job platform. I shared my CV with him and we kept talking about the roles and opportunities.

“A few days later, we agreed on a daily rate of $180. He shared the ToR with me and I told him I would be available to provide support to the process. On the 17th of February 2022, I signed a statement of exclusivity and availability.

“In May, I signed a contract that was in effect from 18th of May 2022 till the end of the exercise.

“After the engagement, I continued to support the process at every stage by contributing to the inception report submitted to UNICEF. One of the key contributions that saw the light of the day was the need for us to have a control group in the study.”

He said he made trips to Abuja, Kano, Zamfara and Katsina on behalf of the company but his welfare and travel expenses were never catered for.

After making complaints to the company, he received a refund for only his Abuja trip.

In August, John told FIJ, the company commended him for good performance and KII, even though KIIs were not part of his key deliverables.

On the 25th of August, he made a presentation to UNICEF, which was accepted, but two days after, his contract with CTC was terminated without pay.

He said he and his lawyer had been making efforts to reach the company, but he either did not get responses or the company made new allegations against him.

FIJ sent a mail to Irfan Mohammad, CTC director, but as of press time, he had not responded.

When FIJ contacted Saka Adebayo, UNICEF Education Officer, he said, “We cannot interfere in that matter. We were not the ones that hired him. He had a relationship with CTC, and we cannot meddle in those affairs. If we were the ones that contracted him, we would have known how to handle the matter and address it.”
