Greg Okafor, a Lagos State resident, has detailed how the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) held his package for over one month.

Okafor told FIJ that the package, containing an iPhone, was sent to him by his US-based fiancée on April 5.

“My fiancée sent the phone to me through the United States Postal Service (USPS) on April 8,” Okafor said.

“After sending the phone, she sent me a tracking number so that I could monitor its movement from my end here as well. With the help of the tracking number, I discovered that the phone eventually left the US for Nigeria on April 8.”

The recipient told FIJ that he waited endlessly for the phone to arrive Nigeria but never received any notification to that effect.

“Ordinarily, I was not supposed to wait endlessly for weeks to receive the phone. When I discovered that nothing was forthcoming, I decided to visit the NIPOST office in Ikeja to find out if they had it, but they told me they had not received it,” Okafor said.

“I asked my fiancée to track the phone from her end as well, and she came back to tell me that USPS confirmed to her that they had done their job and that the phone should have arrived at its destination.

“I’m yet to receive the phone. I have visited the NIPOST office countless times, but they keep telling me they don’t have it. Its officials would not even tell me whether it was ever delivered or not.

“In a few days’ time, it would be two months since the phone was sent to me, and I still have not been able to receive it. This is not funny; it was supposed to be a birthday gift. I ended up celebrating my birthday on April 16 without the gift. NIPOST has refused to deliver it to me.”

Using the tracking number, FIJ also monitored the movement of the package and found out it truly left the US on April 8.

FIJ sent an email to NIPOST’s customer service desk on Tuesday for comments on the matter, but it had not been responded to at press time.
