The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a one-month nationwide strike beginning on Monday, February 14.

The announcement was made by Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, President of ASUU, on Monday, after a two-day meeting of the union‘s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos.

The strike is to press home the union’s demands, which include funding for revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances for lecturers and promotion arrears. The scholars also want the federal government to address the inconsistencies in its Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information (IPPIS).

Prior to the two-day meeting, the union’s NEC met at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) on November 13 and 14, 2021. In the meeting, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU president, said despite meeting with Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, on October 14, 2021, none of the union‘s demands had been met.

In March 2020, ASUU embarked on a similar strike action to drive its demands, and suspended the strike in December of the same year after getting assurances from the federal government.
