It is no longer news that the removal of fuel subsidies and rising inflation have plunged many Nigerians into the abyss of poverty.

Many Nigerians are struggling to survive amid the harsh economic reality in the country. Nigerians are learning to reduce daily costs in every possible way. One of the ways Nigerians are doing this is by switching to cheaper alternative brands.

On Saturday, @ThatPHCBoy, an X user, shared how he saved N5,000 by buying Premier disinfectant instead of Dettol.

“This is no longer the time to be loyal to any brand o, sapa choke and I am now switching to cheaper brands. Was in the store and Dettol is now N12,500 hmmmm, I saw premier disinfectant (same size) for N7,500. I compared the ingredients and it’s the same, so I bought premier Used the 5k I saved to buy Milk,” the X user wrote.

“As for detergent I have ditched persil for over a year now and moved to Sunlight which has now been discontinued, so I am now buying good mama. Also ditched persil fabric conditioner for comfort, I buy the lavender flavour and it’s the same thing.”

Chideraa Dike, another X user, also wrote, “This was me on Friday. Ditched Dettol immediately for the premier brand. Saving cost is vital now.”

For @DivineEmerald4, it was buying an inexpensive toothpaste instead of an expensive one. “Same here went to buy toothpaste Oral B N900, and Ora Care N500 I didn’t think twice. We must survive in this economy,” she wrote.

On the part of @Tehila_O, another X user, what matters is one’s pocket and not brand loyalty in times like this.

Who brand loyalty help at such a time as this! Na one’s pocket matters,” Tehila_O wrote.

@thechristianaO, who bought a cheaper brand of pasta, said that all pasta is the same. “Got to the store, Golden penny spag is 750, Crown Pasta is 650. Got Crown Pasta. Pasta is pasta.”

Also sharing her experience, @CComfortee said, “Harpic toilet wash medium size is 1400, ha! I no fit oo thank God I have the empty container of the last one I used. I just kukuma buy one dozen of the sachet 600 naira and pour it inside the empty container …it takes only 8 sachet to fill same container.”

@Oluwavicktor equally had to ditch the brand of milk he was used to because of the skyrocketing price.

“For years all I have bought was Peak or Dano full cream. Went to the store and the prices were pricing. Saw this one for half the price & bought it. Tastes funny, but i have convinced myself its because it has less cholesterol,” he wrote.

According to @pizzy_funds, no Nigerian is concerned about loyalty to a particular brand amid the economic hardship.

Her comment reads: “Tradefair is ongoing in UNN rn, Students are patronizing one new attachment brand more(Ajibota) than Lush and the quality of all their products are even very very good Plus it’s way cheaper than Lush. Nobody is doing loyalty to any brand in this Tinubuplomacy oooo.”

According to @soli_stallion, another X user, people are more likely to buy cheaper products when they have less disposable income, regardless of brand loyalty.

“When disposable personal income (DPI) take a hit, no amount of brand marketing will put your brand in front of cheaper options because at the end of the day, purchasing power speaks. Economics 101,” she wrote.
