A Magistrate Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos, has given officers of the Nigeria Police Force in the state permission to detain Seun Kuti, a popular Afrobeat musician, for another 48 hours.
Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun gave the order on Tuesday afternoon after Kuti appeared in court for assaulting a police officer on May 13.
The magistrate stated that Kuti should remain in detention to allow the police conclude their investigation into the case.

“Following the remand application presented before the court, I am advising that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions within 72 hours,” she said.
“The defendant is hereby remanded for 48 hours in police custody to allow the police to conclude their investigation.”
The court, which adjourned the case until May 23, also listed Kuti’s bail condition as a sum of N1 million alongside two responsible sureties, one of whom must own a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.
“After 48 hours, the defendant will be granted bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties, a three years tax payment receipt that is verifiable; one of the sureties must have a landed property within the court jurisdiction,”

Kuti had turned himself in to the police on Monday morning after a video of him assaulting a police officer went viral.
