Justice Enemona, a Niger State resident, has accused OPay of denying him access to his N48,000 without an explanation for 28 days.

Enemona told FIJ that he funded his OPay account with N50,000 on March 2, 2023, only to realise that he could not transfer money from the account he had funded that same day.

He said he wanted to buy airtime but got an error report stating that the transaction was considered risky and might not be completed to protect his funds.

A few days after that, he applied for an Opay physical debit card to be delivered to him in his state, but the company deducted N2,000 to process his request.

“OPay froze my account. Or why else can’t I access my money? I have made several complaints to their customer care centre. I have sent all they asked me to send. I have submitted everything, but till now, nothing has been done,” Enomena told FIJ.

“I really need the money, but I cannot do anything with it. Yet they are not telling me what is wrong. When I asked for a debit card, they were quick to deduct my money.”

“I don’t even know when it was frozen because I never got any email or message from them.”

He told FIJ that he reached out to OPay’s support team several times yet the company neither resolved the problem nor explained what was happening to him..

“They keep telling me to wait and be patient. For how long will I do that?” He asked.

FIJ contacted Demi Hanson, the spokesperson of Opay, on Thursday morning, and he said that nothing was wrong with Enomena’s Opay account.

“I got feedback from the support team, and they mentioned that there was nothing wrong with the account. They said he didn’t try to make a transfer. What he was trying to do was to buy N1,000 airtime, and it failed,” he said.

“He can try again. Also, the N2,000 that was deducted was for the card’s delivery from Lagos to his place, because the card itself is free.”

However, when FIJ asked Enomena to try again following the conversation with Hanson, the Opay customer was still unable to withdraw his money.

Failed transaction

According to a screenshot obtained by FIJ on Thursday morning, Enemona got a notification that stated: “Detected that your current operation has security risk. If you want to continue, please contact OPay customer service.”
