Inhibehe Effiong, Chioma Egodi Jr’s counsel, has raised the alarm over threats made against his client and her family by Eric Umeofia, president and CEO of Erisco Foods Ltd., and the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement titled ‘Hold Chief Eric Umeofia and Erisco Foods Ltd. Responsible If Anything Happens to Chioma Okoli and Her Family’, Effiong stated on Saturday that Umeofia knowingly publicised his client’s home address on national television and social media while making public a letter of apology that his client was compelled to write.
“What is supposed to be the private residence of my client has been publicised to the whole world and is trending all over social media without regard for the security and safety of Chioma, her husband, and her entire family,” the letter read in part.
“This irresponsible action by the President of Erisco Foods Limited with the active connivance of the Nigeria Police Force has put the lives of Chioma and her family under threat.”
On September 17, Egodi Jr. reviewed Nagiko Tomato paste, an Erisco Foods product, on her Facebook page, lamenting that it had too much sugar.
Two days after she made the review, Egodi Jr. revealed that she was receiving messages from strange people accusing her of trying to ruin Umeofia’s business.
Since then, she has received a police invitation, been arrested for charges that included being part of an organised syndicate faking Erisco’s products and alleged extortion, and released.

On Thursday, while on national television, Umeofia revealed his intention to sue Egodi Jr. for N5 billion if she failed to post an apology letter she had written before her release on her Facebook page.
In a counter move, Egodi Jr. also threatened to sue Erisco Food for N500 million.
It, however, appears that Egodi Jr. and her family still feel threatened by Erisco Food and the police.

Effiong disclosed that Okoli’s husband testified that Umeofia made threatening remarks at Okoli in the presence of police officers, including the head of the IGP Monitoring Unit in Abuja, on Tuesday, and that only one officer was bold enough to caution him to desist from making such threats in their presence.
“Since the publication of their residential address, my client and her family have been subjected to mental torture, unimaginable fear, and apprehension,” he said, adding that if any harm befell his client and her family, Erisco Foods Limited, its president and the Nigeria Police Force would be held responsible.
