Honey Evarist, a Facebook user, has accused the police in Abuja of shielding her assailant to pervert the course of justice.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Evarist stated that her assailant is a Bolt driver whose car she booked in Wuse, Abuja, on March 11.

She said she entered the car after she had confirmed that his details tallied with his data on the Bolt app. But the driver cancelled the ride immediately after she entered the car, she explained.

Evarist said she argued with him about why he cancelled the ride, but he pointed a gun at her. She stated that he robbed and assaulted her.

“I sustained many injuries. This man attempted to murder me, among many things. I clutched the joy that I escaped with my life. I went to the police and to Bolt,” she said.

“The day they caught him, I was relieved. I thought it would be the end of the trauma and the pain. But little did I know that I was in for a long, torturous ride.”

Evarist said she went to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command every day after the incident to meet with the Investigating Police Officer (IPO). She said she abandoned what she would do on a normal day to “cooperate” with the IPO, but Bolt ruined the justice process.

According to her, Bolt gave her assailant a warning of what would happen so he would prepare himself.

“They told him there was a report against him and told him exactly what it was, instead of working with the police to get him immediately. I had to go to the Bolt office myself without the IPO to shout everywhere before they handed over this driver’s details to the police,” she said.

Evarist said the last straw that ‘broke her back’ came on Wednesday when she realised that the IPO had always lied to her that they had detained her assailant. She said the IPO screamed at her when she asked him if he was sure the Bolt driver was in detention.

Evarist said she told the IPO on Wednesday that the driver’s presence was traumatising her. This was while the police interviewed them on Wednesday.

“They still let him roam free around me,” she said. “They took us to the crime scene together. Why do they keep bringing this man around me? Despite my trauma, I could see that they had released this man.”

She said her assailant looked clean and shaven and was even with his phone. She said he was recording her until she screamed.

Evarist said she asked the IPO why he lied to her about the driver being in detention, but he reiterated his earlier stance.

She said she heard her assailant say what had happened had troubled him since his release. “Why did the IPO lie to me all this time? Why did Bolt give the suspect a heads up and delay in releasing his details?” She asked.

When FIJ contacted Josephine Adeh, the FCT police spokesperson, she said the story made little sense.

“The story makes little sense. First, you do not report cases to the police command; you report them to police stations. No IPO would have taken the case as nobody reports matters to the command.”
