Olusola Sebastien, a paint producer resident in Lagos, has accused First Bank of debiting him N240,000 “for no reason”.

Sebastien said he was in the market to buy chemicals on Tuesday when he suspected something was wrong with his account.

He said he transferred N50,000 to the vendor and it was successful. On sending another N120,000, First Bank notified him of a “network error”.

“When I got tired of seeing ‘network error’ on my phone, I went to a Zenith Bank ATM in Agege, but I could not withdraw. When I checked my account balance on the ATM, I saw N20,000. I waved the thought of it because it could never be my balance,” he told FIJ.

“The only thing I noticed was that First Bank kept sending me debit alert messages of N100. I did not mind them, but I rushed to a point of sale (PoS) vendor to withdraw. This was where I realised that my money had gone. I found nothing in my account. My N240,000 vanished like that!”

Sebastien said he went to a First Bank branch in Fagba to register his displeasure, but they told him to be patient. He said a bank official told him he had to remain calm as such issues are indicators that he owns a MasterCard ATM.

“When I got back there on Thursday, they told me that someone had taken N240,000 from my account. I told them it was not possible because my card was always with me, but they did not listen to me,” he said.

“It is painful. I received the money on Tuesday and First Bank took my money the same day.”

FIJ contacted First Bank via their customer care number, but it did not connect. At press time, they had not responded to an email sent to them.
