Daniel Ezeaku, an Anambra State-based student, has told FIJ how the N66,000 in his Access Bank account was cleared after an unknown person hacked his SportyBet account.

He said the hacker transferred the money from his bank card that was linked to his SportyBet account on June 9.

“The debit description, as seen in my account statement, showed that the money was transferred to my SportyBet account,” the student said.

“But I don’t even know whether the person has withdrawn the money from my SportyBet account or not, because I have lost access to the betting account due to this same issue.”

Ezeaku told FIJ he deactivated his card immediately after he got the debit alert, and then tried logging in to his SportyBet account but found that his password had been changed.

“Upon noticing this, I deactivated the account and later reactivated it,” he said.

“I reset the password and my Sporty pin, but when I tried to log in with my new password, I discovered that the hacker had used his own email for two-factor authentication on the account.”

The student said he had been unable to access his account on the betting platform as a result of this.

He also said he had tried to reach out to SportyBet’s customer support to no avail.

“I called them several times, but they haven’t attended to me,” he said.

When contacted via email on Friday, the betting platform said the company did not initiate transactions on behalf of its customers.

“Please request the account holder to reach out to us. We kindly advise you to contact the bank fraud unit for further assistance on this. Should the bank require any form of confirmation from our end, they should liaise with us directly at [email protected], and we would help in any way we can,” the company added.

FIJ subsequently reached out to Access Bank on Friday, but no response had been received at the time of publication.
