Oluwatobi Christopher Omoyosi, a medical doctor residing in Ibadan, Oyo State, has refused to return the N212,500 erroneously transferred to him by Quadri Abesin for a phone downgrade.
Abesin, a Lagos-based gadgets entrepreneur, told FIJ that he got to know Omoyosi through a mutual friend.
He also said trouble started when he mistakenly transferred N212,500 to Omoyosi twice after both had reached a phone swap deal in August.

“I run a tech and gadget store in Ikeja,” Abesin told FIJ on Wednesday.
“A former schoolmate of mine told me that another schoolmate (Omoyosi) needed to swap his phone, so he gave me his number.
“The kind of transaction I had with Omoyosi is what is called a phone downgrade. He wanted to exchange a phone that is of high grade to a phone that is of low grade.”
Abesin said apart from speaking with Omoyosi over the phone, they also exchanged several WhatsApp chats concerning the latter’s phone change plans.
“He then sent his phone to my office in Ikeja and we agreed on a valuation,” Abesin said.
“On August 11, I got the new Samsung phone that I was to send to him ready and also transferred the agreed N212,500 balance to him.
“The transfer was done via my Sterling Bank corporate account. He later told me he had not seen the credit alert and even made it seem like I did a fake bank transfer. But I didn’t even bother because I had been debited for the said transaction.
“I told him to hold on, but he was in a hurry to receive the balance. So, on the next day I got a reversal notice on the bank transfer.
“I then decided to move the money I had in my Sterling Bank account to my Zenith Bank corporate account.
“The Sterling Bank app had some challenges and I felt it would be easier to send the money through Zenith Bank because Omoyosi used the same bank.”

Omoyosi confirmed receipt of the second N212,500 credit from Abesin’s Zenith Bank account after the second transaction was made.
Four days later, however, Abesin’s Sterling Bank account manager called to inform him that there had been an error.
Abesin said the manager told him that the credit reversal notification he received on August 12 was a mistake.
Sterling Bank was also able to confirm to him that Omoyosi had in fact received the initial N212,500 transferred to him.
“When I asked Omoyosi, he denied receiving the initial N212,500 transferred from my Sterling Bank account,” Abesin said.
“About two weeks after I received that call from Sterling Bank, I asked Omoyosi to send his account statement. He sent an account statement which showed transactions between August 11 and 14. But my account manager asked for the statement to show a few more days.
“Sterling Bank had to carry out an investigation and they found out that Omoyosi received the money. Zenith Bank acknowledged that he received the money too.”
Abesin said that he went a step further to let Omoyosi know of the investigation outcome.
“I told him that we have seen that he received the money on August 15. So, I told him to provide his account statement for just August 15. He has been on it for weeks without a response.”
FIJ called Omoyosi for comments on the matter, but his phone was switched off. He later responded via a text message.
“Sorry, I haven’t been reachable. Been down for about a week now and I was advised to take bed rest. I’m better now. He (Abesin) brought this to my attention which I forwarded to my bank. I also sent him my statement when this started,” Omoyosi wrote.

“Now he alleges I got N425,000 according to his bank not N212,500. The account in question I stopped using regularly because I have an issue like this and still not resolved till now [sic]. I’m surprised and I decided to let the bank handle it. He asked for a signed copy which I can only get from my bank.
“I’ve not been out for about a week now, I had to go home for proper rest. I will be resuming work next week so I should travel back to Lagos this weekend. Will get to the bank, get the signed copy and forward to him in earnest.”
