Joseph Adebayo, a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has narrated how operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Operation Amotekun, assaulted him and two of his friends on May 1.

The student also claimed N100,000 was stolen from his bag during the operatives’ assault.

Adebayo told FIJ that he drove into a scene where the operatives were beating some fellow students, along Mayfair area in Ile-Ife, when the incident happened.

The student said the men ordered him and his friends out of the car and went on to assault and steal from them.

“We were looking for a hotel to lodge when we ran into the Amotekun operatives who were beating some students,” Adebayo said.

“The road was blocked because of what they were doing. We were confused as to what to do and did not know if we should proceed or get out of the car.

“One of the operatives then came to the front of our car, pointed a gun at us and ordered us to alight. I alighted and introduced myself as a student. I also told him we were looking to lodge in a hotel. But surprisingly, he slapped me. I was still pleading with him when another officer came and struck me with a blunt axe on my left leg. They assaulted my two friends also.”

The Student also said the operatives called them robbers, collected his bag and took the N100,000 he kept inside it.

“Another operative accused us of being thieves. He asked what was in my bag and I told him I had my phone and money in it. He said I was lying and that I had a gun on me. One of them collected the bag and left,” he said.

“I begged one of them to release my phone to me. When they eventually returned the phone and bag, the N100,000 I had inside it was gone. I could not question them because they all looked very scary and could harm us.

“I identified two of the persons they were beating as OAU students; one Elvis and the other, Raman. They also accused them of being thieves. But I don’t know what those students did.”

When asked how he was able to identify the officers as Amotekun operatives, Adebayo said they wore their uniforms.

“They were wearing their uniforms and when I asked who they were, they said they were from Olorunda Command, Osogbo,” he said.

When FIJ contacted Yusuf Idowu, Amotekun Spokesperson in Osun State, he denied the allegations.

“The incident did not happen. All you have heard is false,” he said.
