An influx of tweets on X (formerly Twitter) by suspected paid influencers with the hashtag FakeNewsWriter have begun to reflect on the microblogging site’s trends table in a bid to turn the tables on Daniel Ojukwu, the FIJ reporter who was abducted and detained by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for exposing a contractual fraud.

The hashtag began to reflect this evening with tweets that the reporter met his comeuppance for peddling what they described as ‘fake news’. It would seem that the content supporting this ridiculous hashtag was also generated by Chat GPT.

One such tweet is “Daniel Ojukwu, the #fakenewswriter, and his organisation caused a story to be written that the OSSAP-SDGS office awarded a N147.1 million contract to a restaurant to build a classroom”.

Today makes it the sixth day since Ojukwu was abducted in Lagos, where he spent three days before he was transferred to Abuja by the highest investigating arm of the Nigeria Police, the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).

Ojukwu vanished on Wednesday, May 1, and his phone lines were deactivated, leaving colleagues, family and friends clueless about his whereabouts. The following day, FIJ made a missing person report to the Lagos State Police Command.

However, on Friday, a private investigator commissioned by FIJ traced the final active signals of his phones to an address in Isheri Olofin, a location that FIJ now believes was where the police abducted him.

Subsequently, Ojukwu’s family learned of his detainment at Panti, where authorities alleged he violated the 2015 Cybercrime Act.

In the early hours of Sunday, the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector General of Police relocated him to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja.

Ojukwu was later transferred to the FCID, which FIJ understands is deemed a more conducive environment than the cybercrime centre to break his spirit.

Ojukwu’s sole transgression is that he reported on how Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the former Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SSAP-SDGs) to the President, allocated N147.1 million to an account linked to Enseno Global Ventures (Enseno GV), an Abuja-based restaurant, supposedly for the construction of a classroom.
