Tayọ Adegbola, a Lagos resident, has narrated how Jumia Nigeria, an online shopping platform, held on to his N7,499 after delivering a wrong T-Shirt to him on April 7.

Adegbola told FIJ that Jumia sent him several messages promising to make a refund but he is yet to receive it.

“I made an order for a T-Shirt on Jumia in April. But upon delivery, I discovered that the material was not the quality I expected. I then cancelled that order and asked for a refund afterwards,” Adegbola said.

“They told me that they would refund my payment under seven working days; it never came. Weeks went by and they continued to say that they were still working on it. Most of the messages sent to me were also full of excuses.”

Adegbola told FIJ the was surprised that a refund of as little as N7,000 could take so long to process. He also revealed that he was not the only person waiting on Jumia to process a refund.

“I asked them why it was taking so long to process my refund. It takes just a few seconds to check out and pay online on Jumia but it becomes impossible for them to send the money back when they need to. Why should it take months to refund a customer’s money? I returned the goods immediately,” he said.

He claimed that Jumia’s customer service team stopped answering his calls at some point.

“It’s as if they marked my number. They refused to answer my calls but answered when I used a different phone number. All this trouble on a N7,000 refund.”

When FIJ contacted Jumia Help Centre the following response was received:

“The refund was initially processed but could not be completed due to an error in the account details. However, we have requested the correct account details and the refund has been completed on May 30. It will reflect in the customer’s bank account within 2-5 business days (on or before June 6)”.
