Douye Diri, the Bayelsa State Governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s off-season election, has been re-elected.

On Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him winner of the 2023 Bayelsa State governorship election for scoring 175,196 votes.

Diri defeated Timipre Sylva, the major opposition candidate and former minister of petroleum, in six out of the eight local government areas in the state.

Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 110,108 votes in total. Finishing third in the election, Udengs Eradiri of the Labour Party (LP) polled 905 votes.

According to Prof. Faruq Kuta, the INEC returning officer for the election, here are the figures:

Total Registered Voters: 1,026,862

Accredited Voters: 372,000

Total Rejected Votes: 3,658
