Olu Agunloye, a minister of power and steel under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has been remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre by a federal high court in Abuja.

The court remanded him on Wednesday after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged him with fraud related to the controversial Mambilla Power Project.

Although Agunloye pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, local reports revealed that Justice Okorowo, the presiding judge, ordered his remand until his bail application was determined.

FIJ had reported on December 13, 2023, that the EFCC declared Agunloye wanted over corruption and forgery allegations.

At the time he was declared wanted, his case with the EFCC was speculated to be linked to a $6 billion Mambilla hydropower contract, which was first awarded to Sunrise Power and Transmission Limited in 2003, when Agunloye was a minister.

The EFCC reportedly traced a payment from a Sunrise Power official to the former minister’s account, which was spent on shopping and transportation in Orlando, Florida, United States.
