Terrorists who abducted 16 people in the Gonin Gora area of Kaduna State have insisted on taking N40 trillion ransom.

Since February 28, the community has yet to see or hear from their loved ones, as the police and the military have provided no updates. Sources in the community told FIJ on Friday that the terrorists had refused to budge.

“Nobody is coming to our aid,” they told FIJ. “The focus was on Kuriga and other areas, but our people and the 86 kidnapped in Kajuru are still in captivity.”

These sources asked not to be named over fears of being targeted by the government.

“Terrorists attack this area regularly, and we have vigilantes who help protect us because the police and military wouldn’t,” the sources continued. “On that day, they kidnapped some of the vigilantes, but they managed to escape. They tried to get the military to support an attack on the terrorists who were over 50, but the soldiers refused to go into the bush.”

A day after the incident, the residents took to the streets to protest and demand help from the government.

Since then, several people have fled the community to what they believe to be safer dwelling places; some have returned to their patrilineal homes and others have left the state.

Those who cannot afford to abandon the city are waiting in hopes the terrorists do not strike again.

On Friday, FIJ called Mansir Hassan, spokesman for the Kaduna Police Command, but he refused to comment, saying he would call back. As of press time, he had not called.

FIJ also called Onyema Nwachukwu, spokesman of the Nigerian Army, but he did not take or return our calls.
