Akande Adewale, a 22-year-old singer, has narrated how police officers attached to Ogombo Police Station in Ajah, Lagos, harassed him and beat his Bolt driver to a coma on Friday.

Adewale, whose stage name is Rybeena, told FIJ he was at the Ajah roundabout at about 11 am when some police officers stopped his driver.

“When we stopped, they asked to search the car. After they had searched the car, they asked to search us. Then they asked for my ID card. But since I had no ID card with me, I showed them my Instagram page,” Adewale said.

Immediately the officers saw his page, they ordered him to remain seated in the car and asked the driver to head to the police station.

“It sounded ridiculous to me that they wanted to drive the car I boarded to the police station, so I told them both the driver and I would not go to the police station,” he explained.

Adewale tried getting out of the car to continue speaking to the officers, but they became infuriated and began beating the driver for not complying with their order to drive to the police station.

“They beat the driver until he fainted,” Adewale told FIJ, adding that one of the officers went to the car and took his laptop bag and drugs.

When FIJ contacted SP Amubieye John, the Ogombo Divisional Police Officer (DPO), he said the victims should visit the station to identify the officers for adequate punishment. He also promised to compensate the driver and return Adewale’s property.
