Samson Achema, a Lagos resident, has said that officers of the Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Lagos State Task Force, extorted N12,000 from his wife under the guise of law enforcement.

Achema told FIJ that officers of the task force in Okota, Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), asked his wife to pay N30,000 for parking her car by the roadside on February 24.

Achema said when he protested against their demand, they made her withdraw N12,000 from a Point of Sale (POS) operator.

“They collected the N12,000 from her,” he said.

“My wife had gone to a supermarket in Ajao estate to buy drugs for our daughter. After discovering that the parking area was crammed, the supermarket’s security personnel directed her to have the car parked by the roadside.

“While she was in the shop, these touts posing as agents of government came and took away the number plate of our car and left a note for her to come to the traffic office at Okota.

“When we got there, we met other people, who were also asked to pay ridiculous amounts of money. We were asked to pay N30,000. I refused to pay. My wife kept pleading till they made her transfer N12,000 to a POS operator and gave them the cash.”

Achema told FIJ that he worries that the money may not be remitted to the state government account.

FIJ made several calls to the Lagos State Task Force for comments on the issue, but they were not answered. The text message sent to the outfit was also not responded to at press time.
