“I am back, stronger and more determined to confront the forces of oppression and to continue to speak nothing but the hard truth to the faces of the oppressors of our people. I feel sorry for those who thought they can break my spirit by incarcerating me,” he wrote.

On July 27, the Lagos-based lawyer was sentenced to one month in prison by the judge over alleged contempt of court. Effiong was trying to defend Saviour Imukudo, a Premium Times reporter, who had been prevented from witnessing a court proceeding when he was sentenced.

In the reporter’s defence, Effiong had told the Judge that it was fitting for members of the public to witness the proceeding. However, this did not go down well with the judge.

FIJ reported that the altercation between the two had begun on July 2 when Obot threatened to jail Effiong for alleging prejudice and likelihood of bias in the handling of a matter involving Leo Ekpeyong, his client. She told him he risked going to jail.

While sentencing the lawyer, the judge said he would use the correctional facility to purge himself of actions that could bring the court into disrepute.
