A supply chain manager residing in Lagos has accused OPay of gaslighting him and refusing to provide a reasonable explanation after N480,000 mysteriously vanished from his account without his authorisation.

The Lagos resident, who prefers not to be named, told FIJ that despite his efforts to contact OPay’s customer care line and physically visit their office, the company failed to assure him that he would recover his money.

According to the source, his account held a comfortable balance of N485,000 as of Wednesday, but when he woke up on Thursday, he was shocked to discover that only N5,000 remained.

He explained that he had attempted to transfer N485,000 to an acquaintance on Wednesday but was surprised to find out that he had reached his daily limit, a situation he claimed had never occurred.

He told FIJ, “So, I told the recipient to wait until the following day. But to my disbelief, when I woke up, I noticed that an unauthorised transaction had occurred around 5 pm on Wednesday. Strangely, my account still showed the money until 7 pm when my phone went off.”

Panicked by the situation, he immediately contacted the bank to inquire about the incident. The bank assured him that they would call him back within 24 hours, but they have not done so.

He recounted, “I had to visit their branch in Allen, but they still did not take any action. When I showed them my wallet, they claimed that my card had been cloned. I was surprised because my card is virtual, not physical.

“The agent I spoke to then suggested that I might have left my phone unattended and someone else copied my card details. They raised a ticket and promised to investigate the matter. They also mentioned that someone from OPay would contact me within 48 hours, but that call never came.”

When FIJ contacted Adeyemi Adekunle, OPay’s spokesperson, on Friday, he said there seemed to be a compromise but emphasised that it did not originate from OPay.

He stated, “The compromise didn’t come from us; we work with the information on our platform, and it suggests that the withdrawal was done with his card. Let me consult with the team to explore other possibilities. However, I want to make it clear that the compromise is not from OPay.”

Adekunle also asked this reporter to hold on until Monday for a detailed explanation and possible solution, but he has not responded to the text sent to him on WhatsApp. He has also failed to answer phone calls.
