Some Nigerians have sent unsavoury messages to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president, after he sent a message on Thursday, congratulating Bola Tinubu on becoming Nigeria’s president-elect.
Zelenskyy had said that Ukraine was ready to work with a new Nigerian government.
While some commenters appreciated Zelenskyy’s message, many others have responded with angry and offensive tweets.
“Congratulations to Bola Tinubu on winning the Nigerian presidential election. I look forward to close cooperation. I’m convinced that Ukraine-Nigeria bilateral interaction will be strengthened. Ukraine is ready to work together to overcome global challenges, including threats to food security!” Zelenskyy’s message reads.
“Mr. President, imagine Nigerians sending a congratulatory message to the people of Ukraine, for the successful and peaceful conduct of referendum in the Donetsk and Luhanks regions. I’m sure it would have broken your heart because it was a ‘sham’ referendum. Be guided, please,” @EngrDrAkhabue responded.
Other replies were harsher and more crude. More responses chiding Zelenskyy were emerging at press time.

Some Nigerians have also sent angry messages to other world leaders, including the United Kingdom’s Rishi Sunak, for congratulating Tinubu.
It is, however, common practice for world leaders to congratulate winners of national elections in countries where they have established socioeconomic ties.
