SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos, says the police have arrested the doctor who injects children with unknown substances before they are paraded as critically ill in order to beg for alms in road traffic.

Speaking with FIJ on Monday, he also said the suspects are currently being detained at Festac Police Station, with investigations ongoing.

Over the weekend, Hundeyin had announced that the police arrested four men — Uchenna Eze (24), Ikechukwu Kingsley (22), Smart Alasuomu (20) and Onyedikachukwu Iseala (18) — on September 28 in the Kirikiri area of Lagos for their role in the saga.

FIJ learnt that the minors, who are 13 and 11 years old respectively, were brought into Lagos from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State.

To pretend that the children were suffering from life-threatening illness, the men got a medical doctor to inject them with substances that made their stomachs protrude outrageously.

When asked about the condition of the children, Hundeyin said: “The children are fine now. After a few days, the swollen stomachs reduced on their own.

“This points to the fact that what they were injected with was done on a regular basis to keep it up. The children were taken to the hospital after the incident, and they are fine now.”
