Strong Bridge Human Right Initiative, a Lagos State-based human rights group, has accused the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs and the Nigeria Police Commission of recruiting criminals with “background of cultism”.
Christopher Chukwuka Emelifeonwu, the group’s national president and lead activist, stated this in a letter addressing the killing of Omobolanle Raheem, a legal practitioner, on December 25 by Drambi Vandi, an assistant superintendent of police attached to the Ajiwe police station, Ajah.

Raheem was returning from church with her family when policemen from the Ajiwe police unit asked them to park their vehicle. Raheem was shot while attempting to do so.
Emelifeonwu noted that the major problem plaguing Nigeria is that most of its law enforcement officers are arm carriers and usually under the influence of drugs.
The lead activist also stated that Nigeria as a country does not respect the rule of law and violates fundamental human rights.

He added that “the Nigeria Police Force has not learned from their blunders during the #EndSARS protest against police brutality, unlawful extortion, unlawful arrest, harassment, and intimidation, which were perpetrated across the nation by the police officers”.
The group issued a public warning on the Lagos State Government for the actions of its agencies which have been accused of a series of human rights violations, intimidation and extortion.
It also urged national and international human rights groups, international organisations and other relevant officers to conduct a thorough inquiry into allegations of abuse of power by the Nigeria Police Force and Lagos State security outfits.
