The tyres of a truck carrying a 40-foot container have burst at 5-Star bus stop in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

Our reporter, who visited the scene of the incident, observed that two of the vehicle’s tyres at the back burst, causing a slant. The container was only held back by twist locks on the vehicle’s flatbed. Some officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were already at the scene with a forklift when FIJ got there. However, they were yet to begin a rescue operation.

FIJ learned from a roadside trader that the incident occurred early this morning.

Scene of the incident

“It happened in the wee hours of today. We met it here when we opened for business. The container could have fallen if it was on the expressway, and it could have been tragic. Being on the service lane where the driver could not drive on high speed mitigated that possibility,” the trader said.

“Many of these trucks are bad. This one has bad tyres, and you can see it even without looking at their expiry or quality specifications.”

Traffic situation on the service lane was mild, as volunteers were seen controlling vehicular movement.

Road crashes involving cargo trucks occur frequently in Lagos State, and they often claim lives.
