Benjamin Ogunga, a Radiography student at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Ondo State, has cried out for help after the institution claimed the school fee he paid for the previous academic session in August did not reflect in its account.

Ogunga, who spoke with FIJ on Friday, said he has been unable to register for the 2021/2022 session till date despite recently completing his exams as a third-year student.

“I paid about N190,000 in school fees through the school portal on August 20 and I was debited. After this, I realised the payment had not been successful. Later, I went to the school’s IT department and bursary to complain,” Ogunga said.

“I was told that there would be a refund. The school said that the bank requested for a refund, which the bank admitted it did initially. First Bank said that the money was in the school’s account already. But the IT department told me to wait for the bank to process a refund.

“I have written letters since August and we’ve written exams already. The problem now is that the school will soon release exam results from last session and I have not been allowed to register for the same session.

“If I am unable to do my course registration, my results will not be released on the school portal.”

Ogunga also told FIJ that the next session would start this month.

Mary Ogunga, the student’s sister, took to her Twitter handle to register her displeasure with the incident.

She complained that the institution was taking too long to fix the payment error from its end.

“Judging with the psychological trauma he went through during exams and the funniest thing is till now, the school has not made any corrections to this effect even after proof of transactions, series of letter to ICT and to the Bursary department, countless visitation and phone calls,” Mary tweeted on Friday.

“…now that he cannot access his results, should we call this maladministration on the part of the school management because this can happen to any Nigerian student but it doesn’t take eternity to fix. I hope we resolve this quickly to avoid possible confrontations.”

UNIMED later responded to Mary’s tweet by advising that the student should follow up on the matter by sending a message to the school’s official email address.

“If this complaint had been submitted to the school management as you tweeted, actions will definitely be taken on it. However, the student should follow up on the process through the school official email address,” UNIMED’s official twitter account replied.

FIJ made several phone calls to UNIMED’s enquiry desk for comments on the issue, but they were not answered. A mail sent to the school had also not been responded to at press time.
