The United States of America has announced that it is investigating the recent death of Elwin Ramirez, a Marine Corps member who died while working at one of its embassies in Nigeria.
According to The Marine Corps Times, a US-based newspaper that covers news and information relating to US Marines, Ramirez was stationed at the US Embassy in Abuja as a security official at the time of his death.
The Marine Corps is yet to respond to inquiries on how and when he died while still on duty.
Meanwhile, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) has said it is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ramirez’s death.
“I can confirm that NCIS is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Cpl. Elwin Ramirez, as we do in response to any non-combat, medically unattended deaths of Department of the Navy service members,” said Jeff Houston, an NCIS spokesperson.
“Out of respect for the investigative process, NCIS will not comment further while the investigation continues.”
Following his death, Ramirez’s remains was immediately transferred by a team of US Marines to Delaware, US, on Thursday.
Ramirez was an infantry Marine from Lodi, California.
