Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have blocked the access road to the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja to protest the assault on Joe Ajaero, NLC president, in Imo State on November 1.

The workers gathered at the nation’s capital on Thursday to create an impediment on the road, grounding operations at the airport and preventing travellers from embarking on their journeys.

A video of the workers on the picket line was posted on @NLCHeadquarters, NLC’s X handle, with a caption: “Protest action of NLC and TUC at the Abuja airport to demand for justice and action against the terrorist attack by hopeless Hope of Imo State against Nigerian workers.”

A masculine voice in the video was heard saying, “Hope Uzodinma has bitten the finger that fed him and Nigerian workers are saying no. This is impunity, the satanic action of Hope Uzodinma of Imo State that has not been rebuked by the federal government. He has not been brought to justice by the federal government and the Nigerian workers are demanding immediate action to be taken against him. You don’t mete out a terrorism attack against people who create wealth and say nothing will happen. Nigerian workers are the workers who create wealth.”

FIJ earlier reported that the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had ordered their members in Imo State to embark on a strike to protest the manhandling of Ajaero and press home their demands for the fulfilment of some promises of the state government.

The unions also said that the strike would be given a national dimension if the governor failed to accede to their request by November 14.
