Following the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the preliminary register of voters would be displayed at all polling units from November 12 to 25, Nigerians of voting age have started trooping out to their respective polling units to check the accuracy or otherwise of their information.

According to INEC, the two-week window gives voters the opportunity to check the correctness of their information, raise objections and make claims.

The methodology announced by INEC for the public display involves online and in-person verification, and the electoral umpire published the register on its website.

Since the exercise kicked off, there have been various claims of multiple registrations by individuals and inflation of ages of children.

The discovery of these irregularities has prompted many Nigerians to call on INEC to weed its database.

FIJ found that the allegation of multiple registrations is legitimate and well-situated. From a review of the register done by FIJ, it appears that several individuals did double registrations at the same voting units.

To cite an instance, Adegoke, Basiru A. and Adegoke, Muftau A. are the same individual with different names registered at Oke-Adan III, Town Hall Planning Area, Iwo, Osun State.

At Beta/Kofar Jauro Beta polling unit in Mubi South Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Daniel Istifanus’ name appeared twice on the register with the same date of birth.

In some cases, some voters have pretty much younger faces than their assumed ages. Images of children were also seen as qualified voters on the register.

Guided by the understanding that these flaws are capable of influencing the outcome of the 2023 general elections, some Nigerians are calling for a fix.

Similarly, some Nigerians have come with up the idea of engaging thousands of people to vet and thoroughly identify those misnomer cases in an effort to submit a wholesome report to INEC.

A Twitter user, Ike (@a_agboeze), said his team of 50 persons were going through the whole register. He said what they had found was that there were numerous cases of underage voters and double registrations.

On its website, INEC clearly states how complaints can be lodged against any voter.

“If your information on the register is wrong, click on your record card to make a claim for correction,” the commission states.

“If you notice the inclusion of names of non-Nigerian citizens, under-aged persons, persons who do not live or work in the location or deceased persons, click on the record card to raise an objection.”
