The prayer ground where Muslims gathered to celebrate Eid Kabir in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, saw a clash between Governor Ademola Adeleke and Ajibola Basiru, an ex-Senate spokesperson, over sitting arrangements.
There have been social media reports that the governor escaped an assassination attempt, but a source who does not wish to be named told FIJ that the issue had more to do with a disagreement over sitting arrangements.
The source said, “It’s more like a supremacy disagreement with respect to sitting space. Basiru had often prayed at the prayer ground in Oke-Baale, while the governor usually prayed in his hometown in Ede.
“I got to understand that it was between Adeleke boys and Bashiru boys. Basiru had always been the dignitary praying there, so when Adeleke decided to pray there, the loyalists of the two groups were now fighting over space.
“It was more of a conflict. I don’t think they planned to kill anyone.”
A report by the Nation corroborated our source’s words, stating that Governor Adeleke angrily left the prayer ground after futile efforts to make Basiru leave the front space for him.
“Basiru sat on the reserved front-row seat but a protocol of Adeleke approached to inform him it was the seat kept for the governor. Our correspondent observed Basiru changed his seat to another front-row seat, which the protocol still kicked against,” the report stated.
“Just about then, Governor Adeleke arrived at the Eid prayer ground and Chief Badmus left his seat to welcome him from the gate of the prayer ground.
“On his arrival, it was noticed that the protocol of the Governor insisted that Basiru should leave the front row, which some indigenes resisted on the basis that Basiru is one of their prominent sons.
“The scene led to an uproar, and Adeleke left the area back to his car. After some minutes, he returned and noticed that Basiru was still sitting in the front row. He then left angrily without praying.”
