Waris Adeleke, a student of Westland Polytechnic, Osun State, has accused policemen in the state of extorting N20,000 from him after threatening to pin false crimes on him.
Adeleke told FIJ that he was journeying from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to school on Tuesday, but when he got to Ikire, Osun State, policemen in mufti stopped him and asked to search his phone.
During the search, they found a debit alert of N22,500, indicating Adeleke had just withdrawn the sum. They then asked that he give them N20,000.

“It was money they gave me at home for my medical examination in school. I told the police, but they said I should give it to them,” Adeleke told FIJ.
After pleading for seven hours, the police, according to Adeleke, threatened to pin a felony on him and detain him in their custody. It was at this point that he gave them the money.
“They delayed me from 12 pm to 7 pm because I was being stubborn. Then they said they would arrest me and put a crime on my head [sic] if I didn’t give them the money. That was why I gave it to them,” he said.

Although he was unable to get their names as they wore mufti, Adeleke said he can identify their faces and the ‘korope’ (seven-seater bus) they used.
When FIJ contacted Yemisi Opalola, spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, she promised to investigate the matter.
